Philippines aims to stamp its mark in Southeast Asian Games volleyball
It’s been 26 years since the Philippines last won a gold medal in the sport of volleyball in the Southeast Asian Games. Since then, the highest finish was a bronze for both the men’s and women’s squads back in 2005, the previous time the country hosted the biennial event.
But with the increasing popularity and support for the sport in recent years, we may soon see our teams make a return trip to the podium here in our own turf.
Our men’s volleyball team will be backstopped by former collegiate standouts Mark Espejo, Bryan Bagunas and John Vic De Guzman. The boys of coach Dante Alinsunurin are looking to win its first-ever SEA Games gold.
The women’s team on the other hand will be led by Alyssa Valdez, Eya Laure, Aby Maraño, Jia Morado, Majoy Baron and Dawn Macandili. Coached by Shaq delos Santos, the girls will be out to reclaim lost glory.
Our volleyball teams shall face stiff competition from powerhouse squads such as Thailand and Indonesia. The Thais are champs in the men’s and women’s division in the last 4 and 20 years respectively.
The Philippines may very well be the underdogs here but with our home crowd expected to passionately cheer them on, who knows what could happen.
